THere are, of course, different versions in the bible, but one that talks about the final word spoken by Christ on the cross at Golgotha says it was the word, "Tetelestai". I was looking for a way to apply that to my life today ... our lives today. This is that attempt.

"The Last Word"

[Intro]

[Verse 1]

I've said a lot of last words in my time

"I'm done," "I'm sorry," "I'm leaving," "I'm fine"

Words I thought would close the book, put the story to bed

But the story always found a way to bleed into the next chapter instead

[Verse 2]

There's a man who spoke one final line

Nailed to a piece of wood, running out of time

Coulda cursed the crowd, coulda begged for one more day

Instead He looked it dead in the eye and gave it away

[Pre-Chorus]

He didn't say "I'm broken"

He didn't say "The end"

He said the one word that made every debt I've got pretend

[Chorus]

Tetelestai — that's the last word that He said

Not "goodbye," not "I surrender" — it is finished, paid instead

So when I say my last word over everything I've done

I'm borrowing His breath to speak the only one

[Verse 3]

I've been writing my own ending since the day that I woke up

Trying to be the author, trying to fill my own cup

But some things aren't for finishing by the sweat off your own hand

Some things were finished for you — before you'd ever planned

[Pre-Chorus]

So I stop rewriting chapters

I stop editing the end

I let the last word be the last word — let it stand, my friend

[Chorus]

Tetelestai — that's the last word that He said

Not "goodbye," not "I surrender" — it is finished, paid instead

So when I say my last word over everything I've done

I'm borrowing His breath to speak the only one

[Bridge]

Last word isn't losing

Last word isn't loss

It's a King who spoke completion

From a hilltop and a cross

[Final Chorus]

Tetelestai — I'm done keeping score

Tetelestai — I don't gotta run anymore

He said it once so I never gotta say it twice

It is finished — and that's enough for my whole life

[Outro]

The last word...

was never an ending.

It was paid.
