Two Photographs
Bookends of beautiful time

My dad, and other elders in my life, always seemed to say ... "don't blink" ... life happens faster than you can imagine.
Tonight I sit here looking at two photographs, both in black and white. One taken on our wedding day of kids I barely recognize surrounded by family and friends. We're laughing and joyful.
The second photograph was taken by our now nearly 20 year-old daughter. It's the same couple, 40 years apart. And in between those two photos are countless physical and digital photos that don't capture the fullness of the family life we've created.
From the most fulfilling joys to the depths of despair .... from the weddings and the births to the divorces and the deaths. It is all a part of life's tapestry. It tugs on the heart strings and it kicks you in the teeth. Those photos in our memories encourage and discourage and they comfort and and compel.
May this piece remind you of the goodness in your life, celebrate the challenges you've cleared, and remind you that there is more greatness to come!
Two Photographs
[Instrumental Intro]
[Verse 1]
There are two photos on the mantle tonight
Both beautiful, frozen in black and white
One's a young couple, wedding day so bright
Eyes full of forever, hearts racing with light
[Verse 2]
The other one's older, forty years in the frame
Silver in their hair now, but love still the same
Calm in their knowing, wise through the flame
They've carried each other through joy and through pain
[Pre-Chorus]
And between these two pictures…
Thousands of moments no camera could hold
[Chorus]
Two photographs, one beginning, one after the fight
A whole life between them, morning to deepest night
Every tear and every laugh, every wrong and every right
Lives in the silence… between two photographs tonight
[Verse 3]
New jobs and goodbyes, houses we painted and sold
Babies arriving, hands getting harder to hold
Kindergarten pictures, gray hair in the fold
Military letters, oceans so wide and so cold
[Verse 4]
Illness came calling, some loved ones left too soon
Graduations and weddings beneath a late-summer moon
We downsized the dreams, rearranged every room
Still found each other in the soft afternoon
[Pre-Chorus]
And between these two pictures…
A thousand small miracles nobody was told
[Chorus]
Two photographs, one beginning, one after the fight
A whole life between them, morning to deepest night
Every promise we broke and every vow we made right
Lives in the quiet… between two photographs tonight
[Bridge]
We were young once, afraid of the fall
We grew older, still answering the call
Through the valleys and summits, the rise and the stall
We carried our story… we carried it all
[Final Chorus]
Two photographs, bookends of beautiful time
One full of hoping, one gentle and kind
Every heartbeat that echoed, every mountain we climbed
Lives in the stillness… between two photographs of mine
[Outro]
It's a life spent between…
Two photographs…
Tonight
[Instrumental outro]
