Early in my career, a great mentor used the phrase "you can't fall off the floor" when something didn't go right and you got your head handed to you for some mistake real or perceived. I had no idea that phrase would stick with me for forty years and become meaningful on this end of life. But it has.
I don't think anyone gets out of this life with out bruises, a broken heart, scars, and maybe even a missing tooth or two. But there are times in life when the only thing we can see is the ceiling and we have little choice but to get up, put one foot in front of the other, and move on.
This piece was inspired by a fair bit of ceiling gazing, a fair bit of getting up off the floor, dressing wounds, and getting back to the work of living, loving, growing, maturing, healing, and making life a little better each day. It ain't easy. But it's worth it.
Thank you, Paul!
You Can't Fall Off the Floor
Verse 1
Time took its toll, and trust slipped away,
Left with words we forgot to say.
Pictures on the wall, lifetimes ago,
Trying to remember the man she used to know.
Pre-Chorus
Every scar has a story, every silence a plea,
But she’s still here, looking back at me.
Chorus
You can’t fall off the floor when you’ve already sunk this low,
But the heart learns to rise, even when it’s slow.
Through hurt and hopefulness, we mend what’s torn,
A soul reborn from the places worn.
Verse 2
I see the light in the cracks of pain,
The storm still whispers, but there’s calm in the rain.
Promises broken, but love’s still near,
Every tear we’ve shed has brought us here.
Pre-Chorus
I’m not who I was, but I’m trying to be,
The man she can trust, the father they need.
Chorus
You can’t fall off the floor when you’ve already lost it all,
But in the quiet nights, I still hear the call.
Through hurt and hopefulness, I’ll find my way home,
Love’s the anchor when the sea has grown.
Bridge
Forgiveness is slow, but it’s growing roots,
We’re building again from the broken truths.
If grace is real, then maybe so am I,
Standing again beneath this wide, forgiving sky.
Final Chorus
You can’t fall off the floor, the only way’s up,
From ashes and pain, we refill our cup.
Through hurt and hopefulness, we stand, we try,
Love doesn’t end—it learns to fly.
