Let the Sanctuary Burn

December 14, 2025

Freedom starts the day the lie dies

It's become clear that freedom begins when you allow the illusion to die. While it's probably always been that way, I can't imagine a time with so many pathways for the Father of Lies to reach us as easily and as thoroughly as today.

It seems clear that the moment we stop pretending that our prison cell is a sanctuary, we become free and that  being a truth-seeker with the goal of becoming a truth-follower requires the awakening from deep slumber. But the bed of illusion is a soft and comfortable.

To awaken is to confront our self-imposed limitations which provide a temporary sense of comfort and security.

Safety is not freedom and freedom is not safe

This piece is based on the post, "The Illusion of Sanctuary."

Let the Sanctuary Burn

[instrumental intro]

[Verse 1]

I hung curtains on the bars

Called the cage a quiet home

Soft pillow for my scars

Told myself I’m not alone

I counted every brick like prayer beads

Kissed the lock goodnight

Whispered, “This is safety,”

While the key was in my hand the whole time

[Pre-Chorus]

Funny how the dark feels warm

When you never learned the light

[Chorus]

Let the sanctuary burn

Let the mattress turn to flame

If freedom starts the day the lie dies

Then I’ll walk out through the blaze

I was sleeping in a prison

Dreaming it was paradise

Let the sanctuary burn

Let it burn tonight

[Verse 2]

I wore comfort like a crown

Built a throne from fear and doubt

Every “yes” that kept me down

I mistook for sacred vows

Truth came barefoot in the doorway

With a match and tired eyes

Said, “Baby, love yourself enough

To stop calling this a life”

[Pre-Chorus]

She didn’t beg, she didn’t shout

Just waited till I heard

[Chorus]

Let the sanctuary burn

Let the mattress turn to flame

If freedom starts the day the lie dies

Then I’ll walk out through the blaze

I was kneeling at an altar

Made of everything I feared

Let the sanctuary burn

Let it burn, my dear

[instrumental interlude]

[Bridge – half-spoken, almost whispered]

Safety is a lullaby

Freedom is the scream

One keeps you small and breathing

The other teaches you to bleed

[Final Chorus – full band, voice breaking open]

Let the sanctuary burn

Let the roof cave in with grace

I won’t mourn the walls that held me

I’ll remember how they tasted

I was dying in the quiet

Now I’m waking in the fire

Let the sanctuary burn

Let it burn

Let it burn

Let it burn higher

[Outro – single voice, almost laughing through tears]

And when the smoke clears

I’ll still be standing here

Naked, raw, and finally

Finally free

[instrumental outro]
