There are times when awakening to truth leaves us in dark, frightening, uncomfortable places. My recent journey through the red pill vortex has certainly taken me to places I have not heretofore been prepared to venture. Even now, such a trip into the knowing (not even the doing) leaves my skin clammy and cold.

These recent explorations have left me with the clear understanding that a heartfelt plea for forgiveness and direction is not only prudent but perhaps required for survival. It is that prayer which inspired this piece.

Out of This Darkness

(A Cry for the Children)

[instrumental intro]

[Verse 1]

Dear Heavenly Father, we fall on our knees

The night is so heavy, we can hardly breathe

Little ones vanished in the back of a van

Lost in the desert, sold by a stranger’s hand

We looked away, Lord, we covered our ears

While the innocent paid with their blood and their tears

[Verse 2]

Systems we trusted became cages of rust

CPS angels turned to ashes and dust

Children ripped from a mother’s last cry

Filed away, forgotten, left alone to die

Forgive us, Father, for the silence we kept

For the nation that slept while its babies wept

[Chorus

Out of this darkness, O God, lead us home

We’re sick with the evil we’ve let grow

Shine down Your mercy, break every chain

Bring back the children, heal all their pain

We’re begging You, Father, show us the way

Out of this darkness into the day

[Verse 3]

We’re trembling inside at the monster we’ve been

Trading their futures for power and sin

Wake up the sleepers, shatter the lies

Put fire in our bones and tears in our eyes

Let justice roll down like a river of grace

Till every lost child finds a safe resting place

[Chorus – bigger, choir joins]

Out of this darkness, O God, lead us home

We’re sick with the evil we’ve let grow

Shine down Your mercy, break every chain

Bring back the children, heal all their pain

We’re begging You, Father, show us the way

Out of this darkness into the day

[Bridge – instruments drop to almost nothing, faint children’s choir underneath]

Hear them, Lord… hear them calling

Soft little voices through prison walls falling

Remember the children… remember the children…

[Final Chorus – full cry, choir at fullest, then suddenly stripped]

Out of this darkness, O God, lead us home

We’re sick with the evil we’ve let grow

Shine down Your mercy one more time

Bring back the children, let Your kingdom shine

We’re begging You, Father… we’re begging You still…

[Outro – lone voice and single guitar, fading]

Out of this darkness…

Into Your light…

Amen…

Amen…
